Here is the Alamogordo Daily News article covering Monday night's meeting.
Here is the powerpoint presentation given my Mr. Snoddy to support the 4-day week. Here is the handout Mr. Snoddy provided.
The podcast of the meeting can be found at http://cmsbears.podbean.com. The horrible acoustics in the commons make it hard to understand the podcast at times. I'd suggest getting in a quiet place and using headphones. I will be making a formal request to the school to move these large meetings to the middle school cafeteria, as I understand that people who were at the meeting were also having a tough time hearing what was said.

Please note that only 17 of 89 school districts in New Mexico "met AYP" in 2010. This is largely due to the unrealistic goals of the No Child Left Behind Act which mandated "yearly improvement" in reading and math. The mandated improvement will culminate in the year 2014 when 100% of American school children need to be "on grade level." Unfortunately, it's difficult to legislate student interest, intelligence, ability, or performance. The sad truth of "AYP" is that more and more schools have "peeked" and cannot meet the noble expectations of 100% proficiency. That is why only 17 school districts met AYP last year. One of those districts was Cloudcroft...and ELEVEN WERE 4-DAY-A-WEEK SCHOOL DISTRICTS. Eleven of 17 were 4-day-a-week school districts. ELEVEN of 17 were 4-day-a-week school districts. Should I say it again?
ReplyDeleteI'd LIKE to say it three more times because I can't emphasize it enough! It's a statistic that has been largely overlooked. Yet, it indicates that 4-day schools can and DO succeed. I believe Cloudcroft will succeed. In my opinion, we have excellent administrators, staff, and teachers. We have GREAT STUDENTS and WONDERFUL, SUPPORTIVE FAMILIES. There will be many challenges and changes next year. My own teaching assignment might be one of them. While my heart is in FIRST GRADE, my soul is in CLOUDCROFT. I'll work hard to do my best with a new grade level, and I know the community will work hard to do its best with a new calendar. I believe the School Board made a correct decision. I also believe a recall election (as suggested by some) would be divisive, destructive, and ultimately VERY COSTLY. I hope the people behind such an effort will reconsider and INSTEAD .. RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD SEATS IN THE NEXT SCHEDULED ELECTION.
It seems that the teachers - the only group FOR the 4 day week are either afraid of Hancock or more accuratly, only want to work 4 days and get paid for 5. This has caused a teachers vs parents atmosphere in Cloudcroft and it will cause a further slide in the educational quality offered. I personally dont believe the teachers should have placed a pony in this race.
ReplyDeleteMr. Daniels,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, people who what a change, RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD SEATS. THAT IS WHERE THE BUCK STOPS AND STARTS.
