Here is the email that I sent this morning to High School Principal Roman Renteria with a cc to Superintendent Hancock. I will gladly post their reply...
Hi Roman,
It has come to my attention that a registered sex offender is helping to coach the cheerleading squad. He was in the commons yesterday with the squad.
Has this been approved by you or someone else in the administration? Do you think it is appropriate? Have the cheerleader's parents been informed?
Since my kids are involved in extracurricular school activities, I would like to know the school's policy with regards to allowing known registered sex offenders to interact with the kids.
Thank you,
Margo

No response yet from administration?
ReplyDeleteI heard from Mr. Hancock within 2 hours of sending my email. He said that he had just become aware of this last night and also said "We do not nor will we allow a registered sex offender to be a sponsor for any group of school sponsored students nor will they be allowed to hang around students while at a school sponsored event."
ReplyDeleteAs of this posting, I have still not received a reply from Mr. Renteria.
I heard from Mr. Renteria today. He called to say pretty much the same thing as Mr. Hancock said. I still don't know if it is written in the board policy, but the verbal policy is a clear no, nein, non and ne!
ReplyDeleteIt is one thing if we find out that somebody at a school function is a sex offender and ask them to leave. It is another matter for a coach who clearly knows someone is a sex offender that likes young teenage cheerleaders types and then to allow him to talk to the girls and then give him a chance to coach them and come into physical contact with them. The school may not have known at the time what was going on but what kind of coaches are we employing that would do that? I am afraid that Cloudcroft is becoming a target for sex offenders – with principals, janitors and now coaches doing things that are questionable at the least. I don’t know what the laws are but I would think that a parent should expect their child to be protected at all costs. There must be some law that says that schools should be held accountable if their employees take a child and put her at risk with a sex offender. I am afraid. I am angry.
